Myanmar Economics and Opportunities


Myanmar have population more than 60 billion people.
The history start by Pagan dinasty, Toungoo dinasty, Kobaung dinasty, Independence (UK), and Coup d'etat (Socialism).


Since indpence from the UK, Myanmar has been n civil wars among its ethnic groups. Around 160,000 refugees live in Thailand, while many more in other countries.

The GDP total $54.416 billion and $854 per capita in 2012. estimated to grow at annual rate of 5.5%. Lacks adequate infrastructure. The poverty is quite high in Myanmar.

  • Oil and Gas
  • Mining
  • Power
  • Forestry
  • Energy
  • Tourism
The military government has te majority stakeholder position in all of the major industrial corporations. Foreigner will no longer require a local partner to start a business, they are able to lease but not own property. Foreign investment increase about 667% in 2011.

Myanmar's development priorities :
  • agricultural
  • livestock and fishery
  • rural productivity
Main trading partners are Asian countries such as China, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and India.

Myanmar want to improve their health service. So, Taiwan can export their health service technology to Myanmar. Myanmar have cheap labor, natural sources is high, and low crime in Myanmar. Most of people in Myanmar can speak Chinese. But, Myanmar have high prices in their products and lack of infrastructure. and also lack of clean water. Myanmar is nt really friendly with Taiwanese because their history.

Investor should consider many risk, such as :
  • inflation
  • union labor
  • lack of infrastructure
  • no bilateral relation
  • language barrier
  • unstable political situation
  • natural disaster
Potential areas for Taiwan to invest in Myanmar :
  • infrastructure development, such as power plants, industrial parks, airports, telecommunications,  mining, oil and gas exploration and production, forestry and timber development, agriculture, and tourism facilities.
  • manufacturing, such as building materials, spare parts for agricultural machinery and automobiles.
  • healthcare equipment
