Being Innovators not Inventors ... Nothing wrong with that!

I got the idea to talk about innovations in the business when I went to one of my classes last Tuesday. But I still didn't get that much about what I wanna say. But then today, after I saw one of my subscribed YouTube channel which is Alexa ak Miss Trenchcoat ... I'm ready to make one post about this.

An ’invention’ is an idea, a sketch or model for a new or improved device product process or system new or improved device, product, process or system. It has not yet entered to economic system, and most inventions never do so inventions never do so.

An ’innovation’ is accomplished only with the first commercial transaction involving the new product, process, system or device. It is part of the economic system.

To make it simple... Inventor is someone like Albert Einstein who invent new theories. But those theories not yet entered a business. Those theories entered a business when someone called The Innovator take those theories and make the first commercial of it, for example a spacecraft.

But, there are some people think that some innovators are copycat. Because maybe they become successful to put some value in other's idea or product and sell it. But in my opinion, copycat is someone who copy All of the inventor's had and sell it without permission.

Innovator is someone who can add "value" that no other person can do. So that value can increase the benefit of the product/service itself or the revenue of company.

Innovations are needed in this days. For example in the mobile area like Apple and Google. Apple is the inventor of smart phone, right? But then Google came up with innovation that Apple didn't do such as open source and cheaper than Apple.

For people like us, who want to make a business but don't know what can be sold, learn from innovator is a must. Learn how to make a new innovation that can add value in the product or service.

As an example, just like Alexa said in her channel... she had question like this....

"Do I have to make a video in YouTube that other people already done?"

The answer is "Absolutely Yes!!"

But why? Why I have to do something that other people already done?

Let just think about this for a moment as an example...

You know a Lipstick. There are sooo many brands that sell the same red color lipstick. But people still buy it, right? It's because the customers are attached with a specific lipstick brand. It's all about branding and what can you do as the owner of the brand to make customers attached to you. That's what value is all about.

Maybe one brand put the value of "sexiness" and maybe other brand put the value of "eco-make up" . All of those brands have their own customers. It's all about personality of the customers that attached with the personality of brand itself.

It's the same with someone who want to make a blog post about planner ideas. There are a loott of people maybe thousands who wrote about planner ideas. But every blog post have differentiation of course, based on the person who write that post. Even it has the same idea, but if the person who write that post is different, then the results might be different. Every blog also have its own readers, right? So, why worry so much about being an "innovator" ? Just be one!

And if you are the one who want to make a business.. learn from other success people who start from being an innovator. Nothing wrong with innovator. Because if you are the inventor but can't keep innovate, you'll be out of business. And if you just keep saying "product like this already exist", stop that thought! You can add value to your product/service so that your market can see you and be your loyal customers.

Reliability and Validity using SmartPLS

In the previous tutorial about CFA or Confirmatory Factor Analysis using SmartPLS, the tutorial is all about how to start a project and do the CFA. And this time, I will explain how to do reliability checking of the data after CFA is performed. So then, we can see the hypotheses are significant or not.

After do the confirmatory factor analysis, you can do a further analysis using Bootstrapping Method... click on the bootstrap menu on the top menu.

You can see a dialog box...but just click Finish...

Confirmatory Factor Analysis SmartPLS

Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) is a method used to get value from several factors that affect data and whether the data itself is approriate to do next analysis. Many softwares can be used to perform CFA. But, if your data are less than 200, then it's better to use SmartPLS. If more, you can use SPSS or AMOS. Usually, many research used more than one software to perfom quantitave analysis.

This time, I want to make tutorial on hoq to perform CFA using SmartPLS. It is a free software which can be downloaded from its website. The free version is only the 2.0 version. The 3rd version is not free because you have to buy the license, even for the students the functionality are limited.

We start with creating a new project

Click FILE - NEW - CREATE NEW PROJECT

You will see a dialog box to input your project name ... then click NEXT

Choose your project file. The type file that associate with SmartPLS is only .csv ... So, prepare the .csv file. If you want, you can convert your data from SPSS to .csv file... Then, click OK.

You will see in the PROJECTS area your new project which have two things... .splsm and .csv file... .csv file is your raw data which need to be analyzed...

and .splsm is the file which you can use for making your data model and do analysis...

Look at the menu in the top of the window.... Tere is a blue circle with + in the corner... It is used for insertion mode to build several factors in your model.

Click on the .splsm window and there will be several circles which you can use for factors in your model...

You also can rename the circle...just do the right click - rename variables or press F2 on your keyboard...

Let's see in the left of the window...there are several indicators from your raw data...drag your indicators to its factor variables....

You can change the position of the indicators with right click on the variable and click Align Top, Bottom, Left, or Right

Then, how to make the relationship? look beside the circle with + icon... there is a two circle icon which related each other using a line... click that icon...

And make relationship between variables... the orange circle will be changed to blue color...and ready to be analyzed...

For the first analysis... click on the PLS Algorithm in the menu....

Then you will see a dialog box...just click Finish....

Then you can see the result... in the relationship line, you can see there are several values. That values represent the factor loadings of the data...

If you want to see the full report, click on the report on the menu....

You will see a new window open that represent the result...but how to read it?

To see the factor loadings, click on the PLS- Calculatin Result - Outer Loadings
There will be several correlation and you can see the value of each factors. Sometimes, the value need to be more than 0.7 or 0.65... if you have an item that the value is less than 0.7 or 0.65, you need to eliminate it from your model for further analysis because it's not significant enough.

Then, you can also see the AVE value, composite reliability, R square, cronbach alpha, and other... in the Overview...

So..you can see all of the things that need to be seen in the CFA... maybe yes it's not easy to see...you need to move those values to excel and move it to appropriate tables than everyone can see your result easily..

Hope this tutorial help you and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me...i'll be happy to help you.. ^^

Data Frequency SPSS

Open your data in SPSS and click Analyze - Descriptive - Frequencies...

You will see a small window dimana kita bisa memasukkan variabel yang akan dianalisis...
Click on the variables you want to analyze and click the arrow to put them in the next box.

Then click OK
You will see in the output window the result of the frequency

If you want the result to be like the first picture, you need to make it by yourself while you see the result from SPSS...

Hope this information help you...and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me and i'll be happy to help you ^o^

Descriptive Statistics SPSS

Semoga bermanfaat...jika ada pertanyaan... please ask me anytime and I am happy to help you ^o^

Why foreigners wanna come to another country as tourist ?

Know what tourist think and want.
That's the rule.

Why?

As example.. why people tend to go Bali rather in Jakarta ? It's easy to know why if we know both of these place.
Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia. Located in Java island. Almost all of the industrial main office are located in here. And also Jakarta is the most density area in Indonesia. Several problems occur in Jakarta like traffic jam, criminal, not reliable public transportation, and also not many public facility.
Bali is one of the top list of National Geographic Must Visited Place in The World. Because of its nature, also the government of Bali provide good pubic facility in their tourism spots. Beautiful place to refresh mind.
So, with this explanation...we can see the differences?

Foreigners want to see beautiful places with nature on it and also the culture is different with their culture. They want to meet nice people. If they want to use public transportation, they want the easy one. No criminal also.

Malaysia Opportunities with Taiwan

Another south east Asia countries is Malaysia...
They have two main land, near Singapore called Peninsula Malaysia and near Kalimantan island, Indonesia, called Sabah and Serawak.

Their population around 28 million people and the nominal GDP increasing to 936.8 in 2012.
Most people is Muslim in Malaysia. So, they know well about Halal products and that's make the food industry increase.

The SMEs have several problem, one of them is they have not enough ready labor to go through industry even tough they have much productive people in age range 25 - 60.

Quality Apparel in Cambodia

So, another presentation presented in class is about Cambodia... the economics, strategy, and trade opportunities.

There are 5 sectors in Cambodia, as below :
  • food processing
  • agriculture
  • manufacturing
  • tourism
  • garments
The most potential sector in Cambodia is textile and garments industry. The labor cost in Cambodia is relative cheap because Cambodia faced the competition with Bangladesh which is have cheaper labor cost.

In 1999, Cambodia became ASEAN members and Cambodia ranked 35th among 1670 countries in 2003 in terms of economic freedom. The GDP has grown gradually from time to time.
